While the male Avengers were lining up to punch each other in Captain America: Civil War, Black Widow emerged as one of the few members of the team not thinking with their fists.
Scarlett Johansson is back in Avengers: Infinity War, so how does the most level-headed superhero fit into the fight against Thanos?
Civil War ended with Black Widow – real name (if a former Russian super-spy is allowed such a thing) Natasha Romanoff – deciding that her plan to keep things under control by siding with Tony Stark’s pro-Sokovia Accords team hadn’t worked out. Tony warned her that the authorities were coming for her and she made a quick escape.
The Avengers: Infinity War Prelude comic reveals that she caught up with Captain America and Falcon and began secretly fighting terrorism with them, which looks to be where we find her in the upcoming movie – complete with new blonde hairdo and green costume.
The divisions in the team look like they will remain for a good chunk of the movie, so Black Widow will end up fighting Thanos’s troops in Wakanda alongside Team Cap members Falcon and the Winter Soldier – although Team Iron Man’s War Machine also ends up in Black Panther’s home country.
Another old friend who will be turning up in Wakanda is The Hulk, who Natasha hasn’t seen since their romance ended in Avengers: Age of Ultron with Bruce Banner flying off into outer space. Johansson has been playing down expectations for a tearful reunion, so Hulkwidow/Brutasha shippers probably shouldn’t get their hopes up.

The heroes are in Wakanda to protect the Vision, who has the Mind Stone that Thanos wants inconveniently embedded in his forehead, so Black Widow will be brushing shoulders with the android and Scarlet Witch too. And last but not least, she’ll be meeting with Wakanda’s Black Panther, Okoye, and probably Shuri as well.
Outside of the Wakanda battle, our other look at Natasha shows her going up against Thanos’s Black Order minions. We’re guessing that this confrontation (which appears to involve Falcon and Cap as well) will lead the heroes to seek help in Wakanda.
We’re yet to discover how Natasha and Tony are reunited, but they’ll probably have to put aside any awkwardness to concentrate on preventing Thanos from destroying half the population of the universe. Which is as good an excuse as any for burying the hatchet.
And don’t even ask us when her old pal Hawkeye will turn up.
Avengers: Infinity War will be released on April 26 in the UK and on April 27 in the US.
